It’s also a significant transport hub, making it an ideal location for those breaking up their journey, either stopping overnight or taking a break before pressing onward. Tyndrum: A Gateway to Scotland’s Rail Network
Tyndrum is one of the few places along the West Highland Way with a railway station, making it an important transport hub. Whether you need to cut your journey short, take a break, or meet up with fellow walkers, this is one of the most convenient places.
Tyndrum Lower Station – Serves trains heading south towards Glasgow.
Tyndrum Upper Station – Connects to trains north towards Fort William and Mallaig.
For those not completing the entire route, Tyndrum is a common exit point. Regular train and bus services allow easy access back to Glasgow and beyond.
The Landscape Changes – Heading Towards Bridge of Orchy
After leaving Tyndrum, the West Highland Way feels even more remote. The landscape expands dramatically, towering Munros (mountains over 3,000ft) appearing on the horizon. You’ll pass through wide-open moorlands, river valleys, and historic military roads, creating a sense of walking into Scotland’s wild heart.
One of the most iconic peaks in this region is Beinn Odhar, which rises to 901 metres (2,956 feet) and dominates the skyline as you continue north. Walkers often stop to look back towards Tyndrum, taking in the incredible view before pushing ahead.
This section of the trail is relatively easy-going, with a steady, gradual incline rather than any steep climbs. After the tricky lochside paths earlier in the journey, this provides a welcome change, allowing walkers to cover the ground efficiently while still soaking in the breathtaking views.
